RAFSA Frequently asked questions & answers
We always invite unsuccessful applicants to apply each year that they are still eligible. If you narrowly missed out or we have a particularly high standard of applicants, we will contact you to give you feedback and recommend other Scholarships that you may be suited to.
Absolutely. We assign you to your initial club based on how many students each club currently has in training, that number changes all the time.
ZERO- Whilst on the Scheme we will ask you to donate your time to attending events. We ask you to provide us with as much video/photos as possible to help us spread the message (we think this opportunity is too good to miss!) otherwise… nothing, just the freedom of flight!
Our top JR Scholars will be recommended for the Top Up Scheme which would support you in achieving your CAA Light Aircraft Pilots License. As a Scholar, you will always be apart of the RAFSA family, we routinely run aerobatics and navigation competitions with hopefully many more scholarship opportunities to come.
We like our applicants to have shown a commitment to wanting to learn to fly. We understand it can be costly so how have you overcome this?
We ask our applicants to be honest about any issues they’re having. The earlier you tell us the sooner we can help you work through the issue or offer this opportunity to another applicant.
You are expected to commence flying in April. With typical UK weather we suggest you complete the Scheme by the end of the Summer in order to give yourself the best chance of continuity.
Deployments are unavoidable, should this happen we will liaise with you directly and do everything we can to get you solo prior to going or wait until you come back!
Included in the Scholarship is the Air Law exam. You will be provided with an instructor to work through all aspects of the exam prior to attempting it. Your practical flying training will support your learning too. People rarely fail this exam but if you do, there is always the option to resit.
We understand that RAF life is demanding, and home life can be even more so. We cannot guarantee that you will be accommodated at your home Unit but will endeavour to place you at the closest club to which you will continue to fly at after your Scholarship. Please see the RAFSA Locations tab for where you could be flying.
